Patricia Crosby Hinds became an artist on accident. Intially
starting out her undergraduate career at Russell Sage College as a Biology
major, Hinds states that she “really learned how to draw doing biology
experiments.” In her sophomore year, she switched from Biology to Fine Arts and
graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in 1961. Ten years later, she received her
Masters in Painting at the University of Colorado.
Hinds’ main style of art is mixed media, combining
traditional and contemporary styles in her artwork and she has professionally
exhibited her own art work with more than 25 one-woman shows and 48 group
shows. She combined her love of art with her enjoyment of mentoring by becoming
a Professor at Antelope Valley College. She taught at AVC for 25 years,
teaching painting, drawing and art history. Now a Professor Emeritus, she and
her husband, Bruce, share their time in Santa Barbara and Colorado.
Statement of the Artist
The body of work currently presented, is concerned with the
layering of references to places, forms and concepts. The photo studies are
collaged with materials found in locations around the world, and juxtaposed to
evoke new meanings. Sometimes the arrangements have philosophical implication,
and other times they present pleasant artistic shapes.
Varied textures, overlays and metaphors are mingled in the
pieces. Material consideration is paramount and implicit to the images. The
collage effect is achieved through digital methods, acrylics, Plexiglas, pen
and ink and bits of odd surfaces. My intent is to provoke thoughts by shifting
aesthetic surfaces.
