Henry
Wessels creates and casts editions of sculpture in bronze. Themes include
figure or head forms isolated in mid-gesture. Expressive positions of each sculpture presents characters
within a freeze-frame or isolated by strobe light. He
taught in the Midwest where he earned his art degree. After earning his Master
of Fine Arts degree at the University of Southern California he served several
years as professor of art at Cal Poly.
Now
a full-time artist, he lives and works in San Luis Obispo, California. His work
is respected and collected. He
currently exhibits at Mertens Fine Art Gallery in Montecito and at Sculpterra
Wine Center and Sculpture Garden near Paso Robles, California, and at the Leigh
Gallery in Chicago. He also exhibits with the Santa Barbara Sculptors’ Guild.
“Wine
Lover’s Pride” series is the most recent presentation. Additional bronze titles are: Flow,
Hero, Noble Florentine, Flicker Thug, Big Mug, and Wry Eye Lug. A Monolith/Road series is underway
which includes Route 66, U.S.101, Polychrome Path, Cal Highway 1: Big Sur, and
Amalfi Drive.
Within
his serious work ethic, Wessels’ high humor shines through. He has been working in bronze sculpture since 2003.
